Wig care guide: how to keep a lace front wig looking new
A good unit lasts months rather than weeks when you wash it gently, dry it properly and store it on a stand. Follow this wig care routine every two to three weeks, or after four to six wears.
Step 1
Detangle before water touches it
Start at the ends with a wide-tooth comb and work up to the roots in small sections. Never brush a soaking wet unit — that is when shedding happens.
Step 2
Wash cool, downwards only
Use lukewarm water and a sulphate-free shampoo, stroking downwards from cap to ends. Avoid circling motions, which knot the hair and loosen the knots on the lace.
Step 3
Condition the hair, not the lace
Apply conditioner or a hair mask from mid-length to ends and leave it three to five minutes. Keep it off the lace base so the knots and adhesive area stay clean.
Step 4
Air dry on a stand
Blot with a towel, then dry on a wig stand or mannequin head so the cap keeps its shape. Heat drying on high shortens the life of any lace unit.
Step 5
Style with heat protection
Use a protectant and keep tools under 180°C on human hair. For synthetic units, use only cool or low-heat friendly tools.
Step 6
Store it properly
Keep the wig on a stand or in a satin bag, away from sunlight. Loosely plait curly and deep wave textures overnight to protect the pattern.
Wig materials guide: what the labels mean
- HD lace
- The thinnest, most transparent lace. It melts into the skin for an almost invisible hairline but needs the gentlest handling.
- Swiss lace
- Slightly sturdier than HD, still very natural. A good balance for everyday wear and repeated installs.
- Glueless cap
- Adjustable straps and combs hold the wig without adhesive — ideal for beginners and sensitive skin.
- Pre-plucked hairline
- The front knots have been thinned by hand so the hair density looks like natural growth instead of a straight line.
- Density (150%, 180%)
- How much hair is on the cap. 150% reads as natural everyday hair; 180% and above gives fuller, more dramatic volume.
- Human hair vs synthetic
- Human hair takes heat and colour and lasts longest. Synthetic holds its style with no effort but must stay away from heat.
